"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother,' which is the first commandment with promise: 'that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.'" (Eph. 6:1-3)

Ancient history records that a certain city was besieged, and at length was obliged to surrender. In the city there were two brothers who had, in some way, obligated the conquering general and, consequently, received permission to leave the city before it was set on fire. They were instructed that they could take with them as much of their property as each could carry. Accordingly, the two young men appeared at the gates of the city, one of them carrying their father, and the other their mother.
