"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for
everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek." (Rom. 1:16)
The gospel is not "a" power (as though it is one among many), but is "the" power (the one and only power) by which God moves men to salvation. The word "power" in Rom. 1:16 is from the Greek word "dunamis" from which we get our words "dynamo," "dynamic," and "dynamite." Like dynamite, the gospel is God's power to blast men out of their compliancy and indifference, and move them toward eternal salvation. The Hebrew writer said, "For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart." (Heb. 4:12 NASV).
