Who Was Jesus?
With this being the time of the year when many people start to think about Jesus, we want to take a look tonight at what the Bible reveals about who Jesus was. We will look at what his followers, at the cost of their own lives, wrote about him. We'll also look at what Jesus claimed about himself through his words and actions as recorded in the NT.
Jesus' Followers Claimed His Deity
- John 1:1-17
Why called "the Word?" v. 1,14
Why called "the Light?" v. 5
His role in Creation - v. 3 (see Genesis 1:26 - "let US make man in OUR image")
- Colossians 1:13-20
His role as creator, sustainer, redeemer, forgiver of sins, head of the church
A better question than "Who Was Jesus?" is "Who Is Jesus?" because we see from the above that he continues to live in Heaven and serve us.
While Jesus was on earth in the flesh (John 1:14), he showed His deity often during His ministry. In fact, it was His unwillingness to deny this that ultimately put Him on the cross.
Jesus Claims Deity Through Actions
- Luke 7:36-50
Jesus' power to forgive sins - Luke 7:1-10; 8:40-56
Jesus' power over disease - Luke 8:22-25
Jesus' power over nature - Luke 8:26-39
Jesus' power over Satan
Jesus Claims Deity Through Words
- John 8:58
"I AM" - Revelation 1:17; 2:8; 22:13
"The First and the Last, Alpha and Omega"
Summary
There are many other passages that show Jesus' deity while he was on earth and now. We need to be willing to bow down to him in faith and obedience to His will. Jesus said "If you love me, keep my commandments:" (John 14:15)
