Speaking the Truth in Love
Spiritual Indwelling
Two weeks ago we talked about “Holy Spirit Baptism”. Tonight we are going to take things to another level with regard to a Christian’s relationship with the Holy Spirit. We might call it “The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit”.
I. THE WORD OF GOD IS THE SOURCE OF INDWELLING
A. God (2 Corinthians 6:16) and Christ Dwell in Christians (Colossians 3:16-17, Ephesians 3:14-21).
B. Both dwell in us through obedience to the Word (John 14:15-24, Matthew 7:21-27, 1 John 5:1-3, 2 John 9).
C. The Holy Spirit dwells in us in the same way (Romans 8:9-17, 2 Corinthians 13:14).
*The Word of God is what is more powerful than any of the miraculous events or gifts we studied on our last program.
II. POWER OF THE WORD
A. The WORD Created All (Genesis 1:3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 29, Psalm 33:6-9,Hebrews 11:3)
B. Jesus the WORD (John 1:1-5,14)
C. Jesus overcame Satan with the WORD (Matthew 4:3-11)
D. The Holy Spirit guides through the WORD (John 14:15-18, 1 Corinthians 13:10, Jude 3, 2Timothy 3:16-17)
E. Now Christians have the WORD that is more powerful than miraculous gifts
(Romans 1:16, Ephesians 6:17-18, Hebrews 4:11-13)!
III. GOD (FATHER, HOLY SPIRIT, SON) HELP CHRISTIANS OBEY THE WORD!
A. The Holy Spirit and Jesus intercede as we pray to God (Romans 8:26-39, Hebrews 7:22-25)
B. God is active, cares, and is there to help us (1 John 5:14-15, Philippians 2:12-13, 1 Peter 5:6-7)
C. If we choose to follow, God will direct our ways and establish our hearts (1 Thessalonians 3:11-13)
D. The Holy Spirit has been poured out through Jesus Christ on His disciples that we might have the hope of eternal life (Titus 3:4-7)
IV. INDWELLING IS BEING UNITED WITH GOD (FATHER, SON, AND HOLY SPIRIT)
A. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are united (in total agreement) (1 John 5:6-8)
B. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, dwell in the people of God (Romans 8:1-11,Ephesians 2:17-22, 1 Corinthians 3:16-17,6:19, 1 John 3:24, 4:13)
C. The people of God are “spiritually minded” (Romans 8:6, 2 Corinthians 10:4-5)
D. The child of God dwells in God (1 John 2:27, 4:15-16)
E. Jesus prayed for all believers to be united with God (John 17:20-26)
F. Indwelling is to Walk in the Holy Spirit or practice the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:16-26)
V. CONCLUSION
Let’s read one of the verses we started the program with from 2 Corinthians 13:14. “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion (fellowship) of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.” If you have not become a Christian, you do not enjoy of the blessings of the grace of Jesus, the love of God, or the communion of the Holy Spirit. He wants to you to walk with Him. But God has given the choice to you. Will you leave all the things of this world and follow? The decision is for you and you alone to make. Why not become a Christian and enjoy the fellowship of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit? When one is baptized, you are baptized into the name of all three. What a wonderful blessing to be united with them and have the hope of Heaven and eternal life to look forward to. We hope to see you next time on, “Speaking the Truth in Love”.
