1)      Introduction

a)      Recent controversy related to government sponsored posting

i)        This study will not be about the politics surrounding the posting

ii)       It is possible to be faithful to God without having the Ten Commandments posted

(1)    If a Christian takes up the fight to have the Ten Commandments posted, it should be a personal decision

(2)    Our country allows personal opinions, God allows personal opinions BUT we cannot take up the fight and mandate it as God’s fight since God has not spoken on the issue

b)      This outline is seeking to:

i)        Briefly review the people who received the Ten Commandments

ii)       Study if the Ten Commandments are binding today

2)      The people who received the Ten Commandments

a)      Promise to Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3)

b)      Joseph sold into Egyptian slavery, rises to power, brings family to Egypt, they multiply (Genesis 37,39-41, Exodus 1)

c)       Egyptian Pharaoh puts Israelites into bondage, rise of taskmasters, birth of Moses (Exodus 1-2)

i)        The Israelites during Moses’ time were slaves—the children of slaves

ii)       They were mentally enslaved as seen shortly after their exodus from Egypt

d)      Ten Plagues, Moses leads Israelites into wilderness, parting of the Red Sea (Exodus 7-12,14)

e)      Giving of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20)

i)        They were a weak people, not faithful to God who had just freed them from bondage (Exodus 32)

ii)       Lesson given to the people in Deuteronomy

(1)    Deuteronomy 6:1-2 – If we fail to teach our children then we fail to continue the line of God’s children

(2)    Deuteronomy 6:5;10:12;11:13;13:3; (Joshua 22:5, New Testament Passages covered later) – Love God with all your heart and soul

3)      Are the Ten Commandments binding today?

a)      The Ten Commandments are part of the Old Law (2 Chronicles 31:3; Nehemiah 8:2,3,8,14,18; Psalm 19:7)

i)        They are entwined and should not be dealt with separately when considering if they are applicable

ii)       Therefore, the question is, “Is the Old Testament binding today?”

(1)    Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes – Romans 10:4

(2)    Christ is the end of the law because he nailed it to the cross (Colossians 2:11-14)

(3)    Jesus came to fulfill the law (Matthew 5:17)

b)      Doesn’t Jesus speak of the Ten Commandments?

i)        Matthew 22:37 (Mark 12:30, Luke 10:27)

(1)    Love the Lord with all your heart (Commandments 1-4)

(2)    Love your neighbor as yourself (Commandments 5-10)

c)       Since Jesus fulfilled the law, we can be saved in Christ (Acts 4:12; Romans 3:24;6:3; Galatians 3:27; 2 Timothy 2:1,10), walking according to the Spirit (Romans 8:1-4)

4)      Next topic will be the first 3 commandments – “Respecting God”
